Anyone interested in working in Emergency Medical Services, or EMS, should start with the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). To know how to become an EMT in Georgia, you must first enroll in and finish a state-approved entry-level EMT course.
To get their certificates, all prospective EMTs must undergo authorized EMT training in Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. The healthcare profession in Georgia has a lot of potentials.
Those seeking EMT certification in Georgia must first pass a test administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). However, they must first finish an EMT training program at a state-approved college or school. In Georgia, an EMT certification is only good for two years.
In order to pass the NREMT exam, the candidate must first pass the written exam, which consists of 70-120 questions that must be completed in two hours. This is a computerized exam that may be adjusted to be challenging. Airway management, ventilation, oxygen treatment, EMS operations, cardiology, health crises, and general trauma are among the subjects covered in the test.
A candidate’s competence to manage traumatic events such as fractures, hemorrhages, joint dislocations, and so on is examined during the practical exam. Medical situations, such as diabetic emergencies, strokes, and cardiac arrest, will also be tested. If a candidate fails the examination, he or she has 15 days to re-test for the next examination. A candidate might take as many as six attempts to pass the tests.

If you do not renew your certificate before or on the expiration date, it will be declared inactive involuntarily. If you do not recertify your certificate within 180 days of its expiration, it will become null and void, and you will have to go through the full certification process again.

- Fill out a Notarized Verification of Lawful U.S. Residency form and send it. Must send a copy of a verified document (e.g., a driver’s license or a passport) that was presented to a Notary Public for U.S. Residency;
- Must complete a Fingerprint Background Check prior to submitting your application. All candidates must submit their Fingerprint Background Check through the Georgia Applicant Processing Service (GAPS). Criminal background records from the applicant or other sources are not accepted by the department.
AEMT – Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
To become an AEMT in Georgia, all candidates must be certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) at the level for which they are seeking before they may be licensed.
- Submit a completed EMS state licensing application; before completing the form, the applicant must first read the Application Instructions page.
- A copy of the current NREMT Registration Card (front and back);
- A copy of a current, signed CPR card from any of the following organizations: American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American College of Emergency Physicians, American Safety & Health Institute, Emergency Care & Safety Institute, ProCPR Healthcare Provider Blended Course, and ProCPR Healthcare Provider Classroom Course;
- Submit a Notarized Verification of Legal Status in the United States. Form for a residency. Must present a copy of a verifiable document (e.g., a driver’s license or a passport) that was shown to the Notary Public for U.S. Residency;
- Prior to submitting your application, you must complete a Fingerprint Background Check. How to become an EMT in Georgia?
All you have to do is follow the steps below one at a time and you can become an EMT in Georgia. We walk you through each step.
Step 1: Satisfy any prerequisite for program entry
You may become an EMT in Georgia by simply following the procedures below one at a time. We’ll take you step by step through the process.
Candidates for EMT programs in Georgia must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and pass a criminal background check. Some schools may have immunization requirements (TB test, hepatitis, etc. ), so make sure to verify with the program you want to attend.
Step 2: Complete an emergency medical technician (EMT) training program in Georgia
Because certification is necessary for Georgia, you must enroll in and complete Georgia Department of Health-approved training. Below, we’ve included all of your EMT training alternatives.
Step 3: Get your CPR certification.
You must have a CPR certificate to be eligible for EMT certification in Georgia. Your certificate can be obtained through an external program such as Re Cross or through your training program.
Step 4: Take the NREMT assessments and pass them
On the NREMT certification exam, there is a Cognitive Exam (based on general knowledge) and a Psychomotor Exam (testing your ability to demonstrate your abilities). Step 5: Become registered on the national EMT registry
After you complete your training and pass the NREMT exam you have 30 days to get your name listed on the EMT registry. After that occurs, you can call yourself an emergency medical technician.
