Question:
_________
.Genetic counseling helps individuals understand the risk for an inherited disease or abnormal pregnancy outcome, discussing with men and women their chances of having children who are affected. When providing such counseling, social workers must have the experience and knowledge to help families understand birth defects and how inheritance works. They provide information that helps families make personal decisions about pregnancy and genetic testing. All of the groups mentioned may be at risk and could benefit from genetic counseling EXCEPT new mothers suffering postpartum depression. Although there is evidence that depression may be both due to “nature and nuture,” the best assistance for new mothers with family history of postpartum depression is to be aware of the signs of depression and get assistance immediately if they recur. Genetic counseling will not help those who have already experienced such depression. These mothers will need to have heightened awareness of their vulnerability if they get pregnant in the future.
