Mitosis occurs in which layer of the skin?

The innermost stratum germinativum is the only layer of skin that contains cells that can divide via the process of mitosis. Therefore it is the only place mitosis can occur.
The dermis is the inner layer of the skin, composed of fibrous connective tissue with blood vessels, sensory nerve endings, hair follicles, and glands. Cells in this layer do not germinate (do not divide via the process of mitosis).
The layers of the epidermis, from the outer layer to the inner layer, are:
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum germinativum (which includes the stratum basale and the stratum spinosum).
