Question:
The ureters are the structures that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder. The ureters are made of smooth muscle, which allows them to contract and move urine towards the bladder.
Urine is produced in the kidneys and collects in the renal pelvis. When the renal pelvis is full, the ureters contract and force the urine down towards the bladder. The ureters have valves at each end that prevent urine from flowing back up into the kidneys or back out of the bladder.
Urine typically flows through the ureters very quickly, and it takes about 2-3 minutes for urine to travel from the kidneys to the bladder. However, if the ureters are blocked, urine can back up into the kidneys and cause kidney damage.
