Below are the important terms of direction as well as a diagram to use as a visual reference:
- Superior (above)
- Inferior (below)
- Anterior (toward the front)
- Posterior (toward the back)
- Medial (toward the midline)
- Lateral (away from the midline or toward the sides)
- Proximal (closer to the point of attachment – usually in reference to limbs)
- Distal (farther away from the point of attachment – usually in reference to limbs)
