Question:
The care of the central venous access device includes using sterile technique and chlorhexidine or alcohol wipes to cleanse the line’s lumens, insertion site, and surrounding skin. Many dressings are impregnated with chlorhexidine and should be used to continue to prevent infection at the insertion site. The central venous line should never be soaked in a volume of solution as this can increase the risk for infection. When needing to use the client’s arms for vital signs or lab draws, always use the contralateral side of the central line to reduce interference with the line.
