When preparing for a clean catch urine specimen, what will the nurse need to do differently for female versus male patients?

When preparing and instructing male and female patients on the correct method of performing a clean catch urine specimen, the nurse will need to give females two antiseptic wipes and the males one. Females should use one wipe front to back and the the second to wipe from the inner labia to the outer. Males just use one wipe from the meatus to the peripheral area in a circular motion. Both males and females void a bit of urine without collecting it then void into the specimen container. Both male and female specimen containers should be wiped down with disinfectant, and both male and female specimens should be taken to the lab as quickly as possible.
