If someone is tailgating you, what should you do?

While it does not seem logical to slow down, as it will decrease your distance from the tailgater, it will actually allow for more space in front of you. If the car you are following suddenly brakes, you will have enough time to do it gradually, so that the tailgater has some time to slow down, too, without hitting you in the back. On a multilane road, change lanes. On a rural road where passing in the oncoming traffic lane is not permitted, you may have to pull over to let the tailgater pass.
