Question:
This is a requirement of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), which mandates that all prescription medications be dispensed in child-resistant containers. However, the PPPA also allows for exceptions to this requirement, such as when the patient requests an easy-open container or when the patient has a disability that makes it difficult to open a child-resistant container.
By signing the back of the prescription, the patient is acknowledging that they are aware of the risks associated with using an easy-open container and are choosing to do so anyway. This protects the pharmacist from liability in the event that the patient or a child accidentally ingests the medication.
