A patient walks to the nurse’s desk and casually mentions he is “going for a smoke” outside. When the LPN reminds him that the hospital has a strict no-smoking policy everywhere on campus, including outside, he becomes verbally abusive. What should the nurse’s first response be?

The patient needs to know staff is firm in their boundaries, and he should also be removed from the public space until he calms down. While pursuing an order for a nicotine patch may be a beneficial option, it should be discussed after the patient has calmed down. Telling the patient he is inappropriate may aggravate him more and make the situation worse. Patients should not be encouraged to leave hospital grounds while under care.
