What is on the DKT Test?

Part one – multiple choice

Before the test begins you’ll be given instructions on how the DKT test works. You can also select to go through a practice session of the multiple-choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. The real test will start at the end of the practice session.

A question and several answer options will appear on the screen and you have to choose the right answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions may need more than one answer.

Passing score: You will have to be asked 100 questions and the passing score is 85 out of 100. 

Time limit: You will have just less than two hours to answer the questions. If you have reading issues, you can apply for additional time and have just less than four hours to answer the questions.

Part two – hazard perception

In this part, you will first be shown a short tutorial clip about how the hazard perception part works. 

The passing score for LGV and PCV drivers is 67 out of 100.

At the end of the test

You will be invited to answer the survey questions to measure customer satisfaction and to consider what improvements can be made at the end of the hazard perception part of the test.

If you do not want to and any information given is anonymous and confidential, you don’t have to answer the questions. These survey questions don’t change the result of the test.

When you have completed the test you may get out of the examination room. When you have left the examination room, you won’t be permitted to enter it again. You will be given your result and feedback information within 10 minutes after completing the test.

Documents to bring to the test

You must bring both parts of your valid signed NI (Northern Ireland) driving licence (photocard and paper counterpart).

If you are a GB driving licence holder you must bring your valid signed GB photocard licence that shows your provisional entitlement and a printed summary (dated in a week of your test date) of your driving licence record. You must get written confirmation from the DVLA of your provisional entitlement if your GB photocard licence does not show your provisional entitlement.

Photographic ID

An old-style GB licence contains one paper document which does not display your photograph. 

In addition, if you have an old-style, non-photographic licence you must bring acceptable photographic evidence of your identity as well as your licence.

The following are acceptable:

– a passport

– any of the identification cards as long as they are presented with your driving licence:

• an Employer’s Identity Card bearing your photograph and signature
• a trade union card bearing your photograph and signature
• a cheque guarantee or credit card bearing your photograph and signature

– photograph of you, which has been signed and dated on the back by an acceptable person as detailed:

I (name of acceptable person) certify that this is a true likeness of (name of candidate), who has been known to me for (number) years in my capacity as (specify capacity).

Your examiner will accept a signature from:

• Member of Parliament   
• District council councillor
• Police officer
• Established civil servant
• Teacher
• Bank official
• Justice of the Peace
• Minister of religion
• Barrister
• Solicitor
• Medical practitioner

If your details have altered since you made your theory test booking, you will need to provide evidence of these alternatives on the day of your test. Just original documents could be accepted. 

You will not be allowed to sit your test and you will lose your fee if you do not bring these items with you, or you are late for your appointment.

What to do if you have lost your driving licence?

Differences between NI and GB licences

There were some changes that made to the format of Great Britain driving licences effective from 8 June 2015 have no effect on licences from the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in Northern Ireland (NI). NI licences are made up of two parts, a plastic photocard and a paper part known as the paper counterpart.

Checklist

You will need to:

– complete a DL1 ‘application for a driving licence’ form, available from main Post Office branches 

– contain any remaining part of your licence

– send your application and £30 fee to:

• Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA)
• Castlerock Road
• Waterside
• Coleraine
• BT51 3TB

If you have altered your name since your last licence was issued, you will need to complete sections 1c and 8 of the DL1 form and provide original documents to confirm your new name.

You cannot tell the DVA about a change of name online. If your name has changed since you received your last driving licence you will need to give documentary evidence of the change of name such as:

• your passport in the name by which you are known 
• or birth and marriage/civil partnership certificate or Deed Poll

The evidence you bring must show a clear link between the name on the identity document and your present name.    Photocopies are not acceptable.

Note – if you would like your supporting documents returned by secure delivery then contain a registered post or pre-paid Royal Mail Special delivery envelope with your application.

If your appearance has changed as your existing photograph was taken, or you are applying for a new full period licence, for instance, an optional renewal rather than a duplicate, you must provide a new photograph which you may need to have certified.

Driving before your licence arrives

When the DVA has received your valid application before you receive your licence you can drive as long as you:

• have held a Northern Ireland or Great Britain driving licence issued since 1 January 1976 or hold another exchangeable licence – explained at the following links: GBR, Jersey, Guernsey, IOM, Gibraltar driving licences and Exchanging your foreign driving licence
• have made a qualifying application for a licence
• aren’t disqualified from driving
• haven’t been refused a licence for medical reasons or for not complying with the DVA medical enquiries
• wouldn’t be refused a licence for medical reasons (if in doubt, check with your doctor)
• keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence

If you’ve ever had, you must tell the DVA, or presently suffer from, a medical condition that may affect your driving.

When you find your old licence

Retorn the old licence to the DVA with a brief explanatory note as it is no longer valid in the case you find your driving licence after requesting or receiving your new replacement licence.

When to expect your licence

The DVA targets to process your licence in 10 working days of receiving a completed application. If your health or personal details have to be checked this may take longer. Permit at least four weeks for your driving licence to arrive before contacting the DVA.

You should contact DVA Driver Licensing in case your driving licence has not arrived six weeks after you made your application.

You must apply for a duplicate licence and pay the relevant fee in the case you do not tell the DVA within eight weeks that your licence has not arrived.

Before expiration, Driver Licensing will accept applications for renewal driving licences up to two months, giving you time to plan ahead and make sure that your licence is ready in good time for example for a planned trip such as a holiday.

Driving on holiday

If you are going on holiday and hiring a car. Let’s check that your driving licence will be valid well before you travel.

After passing the test(s)

Car and motorcycle drivers will receive a certificate. LGV and PCV drivers will receive an embossed pass letter detailing the results for the part of the theory test. Once you pass both tests, you will receive your theory test certificate which consists of your theory test number. You will need this number when you book your practical test.

Two-year rule

Theory test certificates are valid for two years. If you do not pass your practical test within this two year period, you will have to take the other theory test. There are no exceptions to this rule.

If you fail the test

If you fail your theory test you should look at the feedback and identify why you failed.

You can take another theory test straight away but you cannot take the test for another three clear working days. Therefore, if you fail your first test on Monday afternoon, you will have to wait until Friday morning.
